Apple AirPods Wireless Case Could Double As A Speaker
By Natalie Daher
A patent receipt by Apple shows the AirPods’ charging case could potentially bop your favorite playlist.
The California-based company received a federal patent for its signature wireless headphone case to also function as a speaker. But tech blog Cult of Mac notes receiving a patent doesn’t mean Apple will create the product.
The description on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's website states: “A case for a wireless electronic listening device (e.g., a pair of wireless earbuds) is configured to house a pair of wireless earbuds and charge the earbuds when they are in the case. The case is further configured to receive media received by the wireless earbuds and transmit the media to a non-wireless output device connected to the case.”
The idea doesn’t sounds so bad. While the HomePod is the company’s major play in the smart device space, a small, portable speaker could come in handy for occasions like a long run, or spontaneous patio drinks.
