A Whiskey Expert's Take on 10 Kentucky BourbonsPublished: December 17, 2018
Meet Heather Greene, New York’s first female whiskey sommelier and one of the world’s foremost spirit experts. If you didn't get to take one of her sold-out classes at Manhattan’s The Flatiron Room, read her N.Y. Times-recognized spirit book, or see her on CBS, Fox, or The Food Network, don't worry. Watch this RECO episode for Heather’s tasting notes on 10 of our favorite Kentucky whiskeys.
Whiskey is not a one-size-fits all kind of spirit. To pick the right one for you, Heather says it’s important to consider the time, place, occasion, and price range. She also notes that everyone’s palate is different, so you should go with your gut. Here’s what she has to say about our top 10:
Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon
Produced at the same distillery as Blanton’s Original, but at one-tenth the price, this is a great bargain.
Blanton’s Original Single Barrel Bourbon
Heather tastes little difference between the Buffalo Trace bourbon and this one, but the stunning bottling makes it stand out.
Maker's Mark Bourbon
This is Heather’s go-to whiskey for any occasion. It showcases the softer side of whiskey with notes of toasted marshmallow.
Four Roses Single Barrel
Over time, the flavor evolves to take on a more nuanced profile.
Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Light and floral, this whiskey is made for sipping.
Knob Creek Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Created in small batches, this whiskey is high in alcohol and full of heat.
Great for mixing in cocktails.
Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon
A cask-finished bourbon that showcases a subtle aromatic quality.
Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
A lighter whiskey that lacks the age and depth of the bourbon from Woodford Reserve.
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon
One of Heather’s favorites for its rich, dark, and robust flavor.
